GoalThe overall goal of Emergency response, disaster risk reduction management program is a systematic incorporation of risk reduction approaches into the design & implementation of emergence preparedness response and recovery programs in the reconstruction of affected communities

Objectives

·      To protect the lives and livelihoods of  drought affected

·      To avoid families and communities stress, sale of assets, depletion of savings and migration out of their areas.

·      To contribute to increased competence and resilience capacity of the target households or communities.

·      Fantale emergence response project, Jan 2016

·      Fantale & Shashemane SHG based emergence response, May 2016 to present.

 Number of employees and volunteers under the program

·        Gelana Rehabilitation project  has 8 employees

·        Fantale emergence response project  has 4 employees 

·        Fantale&Shashemane  SHG based  emergence response has 24 employees.

Only 3 volunteers at Fantale & shashmane worked for SHG based emergence Response

Number of grad, current and planned beneficiaries

·         4- grants phase out, only one project is ongoing(SHGbased emergency Response project)

·         Under Fantale emergence response  there were 64,086 beneficiaries

·         Under Gelana Relife and rehabilitation project - about 15,665 beneficiaries benefited from the project

·         Fantale & shashamne SHG based  emergence response 270 SHG Groups each holds 15-20 members i.e. there are about 5400 beneficiaries who are benefiting from the project.

Future plan

·         Designing and implementation of emergence response projects in hot spot areas of the country.

·         Designing of rehabilitation project in those drought affected areas.

·         Incorporate SHGs with emergence response & help to enhance them in economic growth.

Sustainability strategy

During the implementation of the envisaged project a capacity building initiation is widely protected that the community would have the awareness and capacity to manage in the absence of the partners. The Gelana district experts of the respective sectors are being involved from the outset of the project implementation that could enhance full participation to help continue the project activities in a sustainable manner.

 

Partners and primary stakeholders

Local communities, local government, SHGS and other CBOS, Microfinance institutions fount in the project operational areas.

Major achievements of the program/project

General food support for those 64,086 drought affected peoples of Fantaleworeda.

56 SHG Groups established in Gelana district.

Poor rural peoples of Gelana create capital of about 1.5million birr within three years prior to 2014.

Identified SHGS that were frequently affected by drought are now able to be self-sufficient and resilient communities through strengthening their capacity by providing different capacity building trainings and revolving funds

 Stories of Transformation

The Gelana Entrepreneurship farming project started experimenting with Conservation farming project with farmers. The result is encouraging and there is a huge possibility to scale up because of availability of materials for mulching. The famers are also receptive and willing to try new things. The project has started experimenting with maize production and we have also started experimenting with haricot bean. The analysis on yield from CA and traditional farming method on maize yield shows that there was about 53% increase in yield from the CA field.

 

The major reason for difference in yield was mulch cover which retains moisture in the soil and protects the soil from erosion during heavy showers.
